In yet another instance of an automaker downsizing, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that with the coming next gen G80, it wont offer the 5 liter engine on any trim level. Instead the range topping engine will be a turbo V6. Genesis CEO Manfred Fitzgerald pretty much confirmed this. The G90 will solider on with the V8 for a few more years though they wouldn’ t say how long.
There was also no word on whether or not the US would get the recently redesigned G90 that Korea just got . He ended it with saying that there wouldn’ t be any updates or turbocharging for the engine, effectively squashing any speculation that there would be a next gen of it. So there you have it, if you want a Genesis with a V8 going forward , you’ll have to go big luxury with the G90, or go used.

A real shame that Genesis isn't working on a lower displacement twin turbo V8 ala Mercedes -- their engines seem to get good fuel economy in certain applications and tunes. Having said that, I guess it would be best to keep up with the Japanese since Lexus LS has discontinued their V8.

I mean, the 3.3t G 80 is not that much more fuel efficient
Also, the bigger deal than the G80 is the Hyundai Genesis 5.0 which is the same car essentially. it’s actually in my shortlist.

I guess they think the TT V6 that goes into the K900 is enough. It has plenty of shove, but not near as much as the Tau.

I mean in any case Genesis needs more SUVs not V8's. Sounds like they’re working on them but catch up is always difficult.
Funny I was just catching up with my dad and he said his friend just purchased a G90 5.0 to replace an 08 LS430. I guess the new Lexus feels too different and the Genesis was a perfect replacement.

I do like the Tau. Smooth and refined with big power and a nice subdued growl.
That’s not to say the replacement won’t be just as nice. But right now, the turbo engine in the new K900 kia uses has a lot fewer horses.

From what I’ve been reading people seem to like the TT V6 more than the V8.

Oh yea definitely. The Second gen Genesis right before it became its own brand is a fantastic used buy, especially if you can find a 5.0 Ultimate trim.

Yes they are the only company I can say that about: the suvs can’t come fast enough.
I would definitely get a G90 or K900 over the LS or the Germans. Same luxury for thousands less and just as reliable.

But slightly better fuel economy too. But it’s the way the market is going. You can’t get a V8 anymore on the 5/A6/E. Not even on the performance models.

That’s true. The Tau has miserable economy. Presumably the new turbo engines have a better path from “slightly” to “much” somewhere down the road.

Also, I think the TTV6 is a gas hog. It could use a mild hybrid at the very least.

Yea the Tau gets full size suv fuel economy . Thats not good at all. For my next car I’m definitely going Hyundai/Kia. But because of fuel economy I’ m going with a turbo 4 or the TT V6.

I kind of understand them not prioritizing fuel economy in an engine that's intended for a luxury car, at least not at first. But, I think this should be one of the next big goals for their engine development, because these days people can expect you to deliver big power while doing better with fuel.

True, but when the engine has multiple applications (G70-90, Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisades, or what not), that should have been priority one. The Kia minivan runs the NA version yet the fuel economy is no better nor worse than the TT.

i was surprised to find that you can find last gen hyundai genesis sedans with the V8 for around 20k now. thats an amazing deal on the used market considering some still have 5 or more years of factory warrenty left

Right? The warranty combined with the price and luxury and performance make these a better buy than any old E Class or 5 Series. They should be more reliable and cheaper to repair as well. Whats even crazier is that you can find many them with under 40 thousand miles if you look enough. Granted it might be 4 years old but who cares! You have a V8 luxury sedan with a good ass warranty.

Yeah, makes sense. A forced induction V6 makes as much power if not more than a V8, while consuming less gas. What they should do, however, is offer a G80 with the Tau and a stick in N trim and go for BMW’s throat.

I wish they put that engine in the Genesis Coupe years ago. If they put that engine in the coupe starting in 2009 there would be 4 affordable muscle cars on the market.

This is what I thought the G80 Sport would be. But it wasn’ t. And you couldn’ t even get the TT V6 on the Sport as well.

Right? I had often wondered did anyone ever attempt an engine swap. Could you imagine the performance a Genesis Coupe 5.0 R Spec would have had?

Can’t say I’m surprised. The production numbers for that V8 are relatively small for them.
It’s not like they are also using that V8 in a large pickup or SUV that is sold in massive numbers, which is how FCA, Ford and GM justify keeping V8 engines around.

Yea this makes sense to. They never made many and it shows if you look for a G80 or Hyundai Genesis or first gen Genesis. It gets even rarer if you try to find a G90 with a V8. I think dealers will stock one. If that. It’s easier to find a first gen Equus or K900 with the V8. So low production numbers/take rate are probably big factors too.

After my love affair with my 5.0 2015 Genesis wears off, I won’t get another. I love the smoothness of v8. Furthermore the mpg hit is negligible. You cant really play with the big boys without a v8.

Of course, V8s are smoother, and generally quieter if naturally aspirated, and luxury car buyers don’t typically care too much about saving money at the pump.

If priced a few grand more than the V6 it would have sold out. But Hyundai decided to be Hyundai and replace the front end with the veloc iter.....
